[Also in Division C4] The invention comprises 2,6-dicyano-4-nitroaniline. It may be obtained by reacting 1,3- dicyano-5-nitrobenzene with hydroxylamine or a salt thereof in the presence of a compound having the properties of an alkali. Examples are given for the product of the compound. It may be used in the production of 1,4-diamino- 2,6-dicyanobenzene and as a diazo component in the production of azo dyes.
