Novel 6-halo- and 6,7-dihalo-2,3-dihydroxypyrazino-[2,3-6]- pyrazines of the general formula wherein X is a chlorine or bromine atom and R is a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom, are prepared by reaction of the corresponding 5- halo- or 5,6-dihalo-2,3-diaminopyrazine with a dialkyl oxalate, preferably in the presence of a condensing agent, such as an alkali metal alcoholate. Pharmaceutical compositions having antiviral activity comprise as active ingredient one or more 6-halo- or 6,7-dihalo-2,3-dihydroxypyrazino[2,3-6]pyrazines of the general formula above in admixture with a therapeutically acceptable diluent or carrier.
