A thrust bearing assembly comprises axially spaced members 7, 8 on respective relatively rotatable elements 1, 2 a ball bearing 10 and a precompressed elastic damping element 16 positioned between the members, a race 13 of the ball bearing being relatively rotatable with respect to the adjacent member 7 on seizure of the ball bearing. A safety element 14 comprises a metal ring with a grooved rubber coated surface engaging race 13 and a knurled surface (17) engaging the damping element 16. On seizing of the ball bearing, sliding occurs between the element 14 and race 13. Damping element 16 comprises compressed wire fabric or an elastomer. A series of such bearing assemblies is provided along the shaft 1. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a safety element in the form of a supplementary ball bearing is provided.
