Reactions such as polymerisation or chlorination in which a layer of reacting material flows over the internal heated surface of an upright cylinder, are rendered more uniform by raking the layer with rods, the ends of which are in contact with the surface and are moved thereover transversely to the direction of flow of the material at a speed sufficient to cause any liquid thereon to move toward said surface. As shown in the Figure, the reactor 10 is of cylindrical shape and the rods 26 are supported by an axially rotated shaft 24 which also carries a densifier 30. The reactants enter at 12 and the product leaves at 18. Oil heating jacket 34 is provided, and a vacuum port 14. For chlorination a further port in the lower part of wall 28 may be provided and chlorine recirculated thereto from port 14.
