Zusammenfassung:Bis-(beta-hydroxyalkyl) terephthalate is prepared by reacting terephthalonitrile with water and alkylene oxide. The reaction may be conducted in the presence of a diluent, e.g. water in excess of that required for the reaction or chemically inert organic solvents and in the presence of a weak basic catalyst and at a temperature ranging from 50-200 DEG C. Examples are given of the preparation of bis(beta-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate by reacting terephthalonitrile with water and ethylene oxide.
