Apparatus for bringing a liquid into contact with a gas or vice versa

A gas/liquid contact apparatus comprises a container I with a body of liquid in its base and a gas inlet 3 from which entering gas passes downwards onto the surface of the liquid and a gas/liquid mixture thus formed passes upwardly into a divergent conduit 7, the lower end of conduit 7 having an annular gap arranged so that a portion of the gas flowing downwards from inlet 3 passes into conduit 7 substantially free of liquid. As shown the lower end of conduit 7 is a portion 15 movable vertically guided by vanes 16 cooperating with a tube 10 which returns liquid separated from the gas/liquid mixture to the body of liquid. In operation the portion 15 floats and the annular gap between its upper end 14 and the lower end 13 of the main portion of the conduit 7 is varied in response to pressure changes. At the upper end of conduit 7 the gas/liquid mixture passes between vanes 11 and is separated in a chamber 9, gas leaving at 12 and liquid flows downwardly into the tube 10.
