Reconstituted tobacco sheet is made by reacting tobacco with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble orthophosphate at a temperature up to 300F. , using 1 to 30 parts by weight of the orthophosphate per 100 parts by weight of the tobacco; adding 1 to 50 parts by weight, per 100 parts by weight of the tobacco, of an alkaline earth metal phosphate; and casting the resultant material into a sheet. In the examples diammonium monohydrogen phosphate and calcium phosphate are used. Many other suitable alkaline earth metal phosphates are specified and include both synthetic and naturally occurring phosphates. |
