The frusto-conical base portion of a container for powder or granular material is provided with a pair of aeration devices 16 each of which comprises a semi-circular base 20, a wall 18, wedge-shaped porous plates 22 and triangular end walls 24. The opposing end walls 24 of the two devices are spaced apart to form a slot 32 extending from one side of the container to the other. Two alternative discharge pipes, controlled by valves, are provided, one (34), Figs. 2, 4 (not shown), communicating with the interior of the container through an opening 36 in the side wall aligned with the slot 32.
