Compounds of the formula wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represent hydrogen or lower (up to C 5 ) alkyl radicals, at least three of the groups representing lower alkyl radicals, may be obtained by catalytically hydrogenating a 1,6-hexanediol of the formula where X and Y are formyl radicals, or an acetal or alkanoate derivative thereof. The reduction may be effected by employing a Raney nickel catalyst in a lower (up to C 5 ) alcohol reduction medium at a temperature of 100-200‹ C. under a hydrogen pressure of 500-2000 p.s.i. In an example, 2,2,H-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol is prepared; other compounds are specified.
