Brake lining and cooling means

A brake comprising a drum 10, a brake band 11 encircling the drum, and means to provide a body of liquid coolant for immersing at least part of the brake, a friction lining for the brake band, the lining having grooves arranged in separate groups of parallel grooves, each group angled from a longitudinal axis of the lining to permit the grooves of each group to intersect those of another and thereby form parallel rows of spaced lands on the lining, the rows 15 of lands being at an angle to the direction of travel of the surface of the brake drum to avoid the effect of tracking in the contact between the drum and the lands, an area on the lining void of lands adjacent an orifice 21 extending through the land. The lining may be formed in separate sections and the intersecting groups of parallel grooves may cross the lining at slightly different angles to produce a pumping effect induced by rotation of the drum, the pumping effect being greater towards one edge of the lining section than the other.
