Antibiotically active cpds. which differ from Rifamycin O of formula (I) in having instead of the dotted portion of the molecule the residue: X = NH, S, or O; R together with d and e is the residue of an aromatic cpd. or an aromatic heterocyclic cpd. B. 16-,17-,18-,19-Tetrahydro derivs. of (IV) and (V). (IV) and (V) have a strong antibiotic activity against gram positive bacteria and against tubercle bacilli; they are also active against gram negative bacteria. The cpds. may also be added to animal feedstuffs and used for conservation of food.
