In the manufacture of key levers for a musical instrument a facing element 50 for a series of natural notes is formed with openings 56 for the black notes and is secured by adhesive to a keyboard blank 20 after positioning by means of a plug or dummy black note 64 fitting a hole formed on the blank. The facing element is formed with a groove along which the keyboard blank is cut to form the lever. The plug or dummy black note 64 carries pins which fit bores 38 in the blank 20.
