The outputs from the seven decimal denominations of the counter are applied in a 4-bit code to the contacts of sixteen banks SW7A, SW7B &c., Figs. 2A, 2B, of a manually operable selector switch which selects four of the denominations (according to the expected values of the capacitors being tested). The corresponding sixteen signals are applied via contacts of control relay K20 and valves V1A-V8B to relays K1-K16 of the first storage means. Contacts of these relays are connected in four networks, Fig. 3, one for each of the four denominations, to give earth signals on the appropriate ones of four groups of ten leads representing the decimal digits. The highest denomination is connected via the contacts of two selector switch banks SW8A, SW8B to the network 41 of the second highest network. The banks are arranged to select adjacent digits and the arrangement is such that unless the highest digit corresponds to one of those digits no signal can pass to the network 41, i.e. the capacitor value is not in the coarse range set by the switch SW8. If the value does correspond an earth signal passes to the network 41 and, with the outputs from . networks 42 and 43, provides, by closure of control relay contacts K38A-K38D, thence decimal digits for application to a cross-bar switch, Fig. 4. This is a standard telephonetype switch giving an output on an appropriate one of 1000 sockets 62. Ten jacks J1-J10 are inserted in certain ones of these sockets to select ten ranges of values.
