Zusammenfassung:	An a -tocopherol dimer of formula is used as an antioxidant for fats and oils.ALSO:The invention comprises an a -tocopherol dimer of the formula:- and its acetate. The dimer is made by oxidizing a -tocopherol with a water-soluble salt of ferricyanic acid, e.g. the potassium salt, under aqueous alkaline conditions to give an intermediate product of formula:- and reducing this product with a mild reducing agent, e.g. ascorbic acid. The acetate ester may be prepared by treating the a -tocopherol dimer with acetic anhydride and pyridine. The diquinone of the a -tocopherol dimer may be obtained by oxidizing the dimer with ferric chloride and has the formula:- The a -tocopherol dimer may be used as an antioxidant in the stabilization of Vitamin A esters, e.g. Vitamin A palmitate.
