A reed for a musical instrument comprises a root portion 1 running to a comparatively thin tip portion 2 the whole being formed of synthetic resin having a reinforcement embedded therein and being formed at a point between the tip and the root with a discontinuity such as a transverse step 4 or a weakening notch or groove extending fully across the reed from edge to edge. The resin may be an epoxy resin or a polyester resin and the reinforcement may be glass fibre.
