A row of the card is staticized in cores 13 and is then dynamicized by pulses from digit ring 29 which when combined with a signal from word ring 28 switch those cores which have been set by the sensing of a hole in the card. The word ring is used to select those columns of the card from which data is to be transferred. Each stage of the word ring is coupled to ten cores, corresponding to ten columns of the card, and which stages are operative depend on the plug connections between hubs 55, 61. The rings are driven by signals derived from the drum.
