Parallel, vertically arranged plate evaporators as described in Specification 724,303 are defrosted by discharging water on to their top edges from tubes 20 having slots along their lower parts so that they can be sprung on to the top flanges of the evaporators, the slots being enlarged at 25 to provide water outlets. Members 30 at the ends of the tubes discharge water on to the end walls of the evaporators. The tubes are supplied from pipe 10 through end header 5 and pipes 12.
