Lightning arrestor for radomes

A lightning arrester for an aircraft plastic section such as a nose cone comprises a series of metal foil strips 10 such as aluminium alloy tape adhesively bonded to the surface, each strip being individually grounded as at 12 to the aircraft fuselage 14. The tapes should not occupy more than 50% of the area of the cone nor be less than 18 inches apart or 18 inches from the fuselage. The adhesive, which is of an electrically and thermally resistant type, may be attached to the cone or the tape, and after installation the whole of the cone is covered with a catalyzed epoxy paint. A lightning stroke fractures a tape which is exploded from the point of contact, providing an ionized trail which conducts the main stroke of the lightning discharge.
