Beads for pneumatic tires

The endless wire bead cores of a pneumatic tyre are replaced by one or more plies 3, 4 of discontinuous metal or like cords disposed with the cords extending obliquely to the circumferential direction. The bead plies may be used in conjunction with a carcase of radial cords 1 which extend the full depth of the bead plies, on one or other side thereof, or therebetween, and which may be folded back around some or all of the bead plies, as exemplified in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 8. The bead plies may have a cord angle of 5 to 30 degrees to the circumferential and may be in single or folded strips rubberized with a material having a modulus of elasticity exceeding 350 gm./mm.2. In a carcase which is void of reinforcement, three bead plies may be used to provide a triangulation effect, the cords of one of the plies extending radially of the tyre.
