Zusammenfassung:	Petroleum distillates are purified by treatment with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hypochlorite solution and then with a mixture of methanol and caustic alkali solution. The distillate may be further contacted with caustic alkali solution alone. The process may be operated batchwise or continuously. Examples are given of the treatment of straight-run kerosine, straight-run and cracked naphtha and gas oil with calcium hypochlorite and then with methanol and caustic soda.
