Zusammenfassung:	A system and method are used for monitoring at least one medical device in a surgical environment. The system includes monitoring apparatuses that can be interconnected for data transmission in a monitoring network and that have a detection device designed to detect whether a transponder of a medical device is located in a detection region extending around the relevant monitoring apparatus. The monitoring apparatuses are arrangeable such that the detection regions overlap. The system also includes a data processing apparatus that is connectable via the monitoring network to the monitoring apparatuses for data transmission and that is designed to store points in time of detections of the transponder. The data processing apparatus can calculate time periods in which the transponder is located exclusively in one of the detection regions and/or to register sequences in which the monitoring apparatuses detect the transponder in the detection regions.
