A licensor, typically an original equipment manufacturer or approved part supplier provides to a part purchaser of a 3D printed spare part a license to an enhanced computer aided design data file (CAD) used to produce the part. The enhanced CAD file may be provided with security features programmed therein such that it can be used only on 3D printing equipment, and/or at 3D printing locations that are pre-approved or authorized by the licensor.
