One embodiment may comprise automatically starting a counter on an IoT device in response to initially receiving power from a power supply loop to which the IoT device is connected, and by the IoT device, determining whether to perform a pairing operation for associating the IoT device with a wireless network based at least in part on a state of the counter in the IoT device.
