In the system for automatically translating characters in an image, a processor determines, after a translation request is input, whether a signal input through an input and output interface is a character region selection signal or an autofocus request signal by analyzing the input signal, acquires a translation target region on the basis of a determination result, recognizes characters in the acquired translation target region, and then translates the recognized characters.
