The permanent magnet rotor includes a rotor core, a plurality of permanent magnets and a non-magnetic retaining ring. The rotor core is magnetically permeable. The rotor core has an outer surface and a plurality of dovetail grooves on the outer surface. The permanent magnets are respectively disposed in the plurality of dovetail grooves. The non-magnetic retaining ring is inserted over the rotor core. The plurality of permanent magnets are surrounded by the non-magnetic retaining ring. The non-magnetic retaining ring is magnetically impermeable.
