Zusammenfassung:	The invention discloses a method for detecting a malfunction of a sensor of a vehicle safety device. A method for detecting a failure or defect of a sensor (12) of a vehicle safety device (10) with a control unit (14) of the vehicle safety device (10) and at least one self-testing sensor (12), wherein the control unit and the self-testing sensor are separated, measured values are transmitted to the control unit (14) comprises the following steps: a) carrying out the self-test of the sensor (12), in which the measuring path of the sensor (12) is artificially excited to produce a test measured value in response to the artificial stimulation, b) transmitting a signal comprising the ratio of the test measured value to the strength of the artificial activation, the deviation of the test measured value to the artificial activation, and/or the test measured values to the control unit (14), c) checking whether the ratio, deviation and/or test measured value are plausible by the control unit (14); d) determining that the sensor (12) has failed or is defective, if the ratio, deviation and/or test measurement are deemed to be implausible by the control unit (14).
