The compositions and methods relate to producing a concentration of one or more metal ions in the lead acid battery electrolyte. The various compositions disclosed include battery electrode plate grids designed to produce a concentration of one or more metal ions in the lead acid battery electrolyte. The disclosure also describes resin coated battery components or battery components coated with a metal oxide layer in which the coatings produce a concentration of one or more metal ions in the lead acid battery electrolyte.
