Zusammenfassung:	An approach is provided for determining documents to display and includes extracting, from metadata in a first document, data that indicates a function and a filter for determining which documents in a database may be viewed to perform the function. It is determined whether the function is to be performed. If it is determined that the function is to be performed, then display of an icon representing a second document from the database is initiated based on the filter. In some embodiments, a document is transmitted, which includes metadata that comprises data that indicates a function and a filter for determining which documents in a database may be viewed to perform the function. A message is also transmitted comprising data that indicates a recipient has permission to perform the function.
