In order to avoid compatibility problems the controller of the frequency converter comprises a memory, in which control programs of peripheral devices connectable to the controller are stored; and a compatibility table; a check element, which by utilizing the memory checks specifically for each peripheral device whether a compatible control program is stored in a memory of the peripheral device; and an update element, which, if need, be retrieves the control program of the peripheral device from the memory of the controller and sends it to the peripheral device to be used if the control program stored in the memory is, on the basis of the hardware identifier and the compatibility table, compatible.
