The monomer is structurally characterized by the presence of a tertiary hydroxyl group and a vinyl-polymerizable group X and the absence of an ester linkage derived from a tertiary hydroxyl group. Polymers produced by the polymerization of the monomer and an optional comonomer have a moderated reactivity and hydrophilicity.
