The method comprises detecting (302) the start of a symbol creation function; enlarging (304) the size of the contact area for symbol creation after the start of the symbol creation function and interpreting (310) a symbol created in the enlarged contact area for symbol creation. The invention also relates to a portable electronic device comprising: a screen, a contact surface and a contact area for symbol creation. The device comprises means (100, 106) for: detecting the start of a symbol creation function; enlarging the size of the contact area for symbol creation after the start of the symbol creation function and interpreting a symbol created in the enlarged contact area for symbol creation.
