A current (IL) that flows through the load contact (2) is monitored. The electric circuit is interrupted when the current (IL) exceeds a threshold value that is below the current carrying capacity of the load contact (2). The electric circuit is automatically closed again after the current (IL) which flows through the load contact (2) has decreased.
