The controlling unit determines whether or not to perform the initialization operation based on at least one of a change in the state of the image pickup apparatus during a system off and a change in the state of the image pickup apparatus between at a time of a system shutdown and at a time of a system startup, each change being acquired from an output signal from the state detecting unit.
