Zusammenfassung:Provided are: a liquid crystal aligning agent which is able to make the pretilt angles of liquid crystals almost zero degree, and which is therefore used for display elements such as a monitor that requires images having high definition, high luminance and high reliability; and a method for producing a liquid crystal alignment film from this liquid crystal aligning agent. A liquid crystal aligning agent which contains at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of polyimide precursors that are obtained by subjecting a tetracarboxylic acid component and a diamine component containing a diamine represented by formula (1) to a polymerization reaction, and polyimides obtained from these polyimide precursors; and a method for producing a liquid crystal alignment film from this liquid crystal aligning agent. (In the formula, X represents NHCO, CONH, COO- or OCO; m represents a number of 1-5; n represents a number of 0-6; and each of R1-R4 independently represents a methyl group or an ethyl group.)
