Tracking error signal generating method

A tracking error signal generating method is used with a disc reading apparatus and a disc to be read. The disc to be read has thereon a data zone and a blank zone. The generating method includes the following steps. The disc reading apparatus performs an actuating procedure on the disc to be read, which has been positioned therein. The actuating procedure includes a cross-track test operation on the data zone and blank zone to detect first and second tracking-error-signal voltage peaks V1 and V2, and the ratio of V2 to V1 is recorded. When the disc reading apparatus completes the actuating procedure, a ready-to-read state is entered. In the ready-to-read state, a first tracking-error-signal gain A1 is adopted to generate a tracking error signal when the disc reading apparatus executes a tracking and reading operation on the data zone of the disc to be read, and a second tracking-error-signal gain A2 is adopted to generate a tracking error signal when the disc reading apparatus executes a tracking and reading operation on the blank zone of the disc to be read. The ratio A1/A2 of the first tracking-error-signal gain A1 to the second tracking-error-signal gain A2 is equal to V2/V1.
