Zusammenfassung:	A method for producing a poly(phenylene ether) having a branched structure is provided in which it is possible to easily control the molecular weight of the poly(phenylene ether) having a branched structure. The method for producing a poly(phenylene ether) comprises a step in which a liquid reaction-product mixture containing a poly(phenylene ether) is obtained by polymerizing one or more starting-material phenols including a phenol at least satisfying the following requirement 1 and a step in which at least one polymerization-inhibiting ingredient selected from the group consisting of oxygen scavengers, radical scavengers, and metallic-catalyst inactivators is added to the liquid reaction-product mixture to thereby control the molecular weight of the poly(phenylene ether). (Requirement 1) To have hydrogen atoms at an ortho position and the para position.
