A liquid crystal alignment agent includes a polymer [P] that is an additional polymer including, at its side chain, a partial structure capable of expressing at least either a radical generation function to generate radicals by light irradiation or a photosensitization function to indicate photosensitization action by light irradiation, or a polymerizable carbon-carbon unsaturated bond, the polymer including at least one of structure units represented by formulas (1) to (4), where X1 to X4 each represent a monovalent group including a partial structure capable of expressing at least either a radical generation function to generate radicals by light irradiation or a photosensitization function to indicate photosensitization action by light irradiation, or a polymerizable carbon-carbon unsaturated bond.
