Multimedia content playing method and system

A method for playing multimedia content is executed by the mobile device and a server module comprising a plurality of reference images, a plurality of multimedia contents, and a matching information. The matching information records the correspondence relationship between at least a reference image and at least a multimedia content. The method includes: (a) the server module updates the correspondence relationship; (b) the server module transmits the matching information to the mobile device; (c) the mobile device downloads at least one reference image and the corresponding multimedia content from the server module according to the matching information; (d) the mobile device captures the images of the target object to generate the target images including the target object; and (e) when the mobile device determines that the similarity between the target images and the downloaded reference images is higher than the default threshold value, the corresponding multimedia content is played.
