Zusammenfassung:	A method and a protective coating for protecting a substrate (1) from effects caused by an interaction of the substrate (1) with the environment, by depositing on the substrate (1) a first layer (3) comprising a top surface (4) oriented essentially parallel to the surface of the substrate (1). The method comprises the step of depositing a second layer (5) on the first layer (3) by exposing the first layer (3) to alternately repeated surface reactions of two or more different precursors, to at least partially fill pores (7) in the first layer (3), the pores (7) opening through to the top surface (4), with the material of the second layer (5), such that the second layer (5) conforms to the shape of the surface of the pores (7).
