A device and method for automatically identifying character code is described. A code database stores code data corresponding to encoding methods. A reading module reads a document according to a default code of the encoding methods and produces a differential section which is the codes of the document not match with the default code. A comparing module compares the differential section with the code data to produce match degrees. A determining module determines an original code from the highest of the match degrees. A transfer module transfers the differential section to the default code from the original code and displays the whole of the document.
