Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a process and a device for the heat treatment of moving workpieces of a great length. In this process, the long, moving workpiece 1 is heated electrically between a first electrical contact unit 19 and a central electrical contact unit 20 at first in air to a temperature at which steam begins to form on the surface of the workpiece 1 when it is brought into contact with a liquid. It is then heated in the liquid, kept in a tank 7, at a rate in excess of 1000 degrees Cs, after which the workpiece 1 is cooled while till in movement. A third electrical contact unit 21 is so arranged that the long workpiece 1 is in the tank 7 and under the liquid layer during the cooling stage. The liquid is then removed from the surface of the long, moving workpiece 1 by pressing against it a draw plate 22 arranged in the tank 7 in the immediate vicinity of the outlet orifice 9 of the tank 7 under the layer of liquid past the last electrical contact unit 21. The long workpiece 1 is then wound up.
