Zusammenfassung:Sweden has large deposits of iron ore with a high phosphorus content. Therefore Swedish production of crude iron from local raw materials must eventually be based on high-phosphorus ore. However, a new process is needed in order to make this production competitive. The process proposed by the invention is characterized in that the phosphorus is removed when the iron ore has already been reduced to FeO and melt. Therefore, the iron ore, after its preliminary reduction, is mainly present as FeO in melt form at a temperature of over 1350 degrees C. Silica is added to this molten FeO-rich slag in such an amount that the SiO2 : CaO ratio in the slag exceeds 1. Hydrogen is then injected into the slag in addition to steam in order to reduce the P2O5 in the slag and remove the phosphorus into the gas compartment of the furnace.
