1457380 Carbon black RUHRCHEMIE AG 18 Aug 1975 [23 Aug 1974] 34283/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Carbon black is separated from water by contacting with the thick oil obtained as a byproduct in the oxo synthesis consisting of the reaction of olefins with CO and H 2 and then concentrating the thus obtained suspension of C black in thick oil in a plate separator. The process is particularly applicable to synthesis gas manufacture wherein oxygen 1 and fuel oil 2 are reacted 3 and the reaction gas is scrubbed with water to remove C black. The C blackwater mixture from the scrubber 4 is mixed with the thick oil 8 in a decanter 7. The aqueous phase is separated and recycled 11 to the scrubber 4. The oil/C black phase is passed to a plate separator 10. The classified phase is recycled to the decanter 7 and the thickened phase typically containing 10-15% C black is mixed 15 with fuel oil and recycled 16 to the reactor 3, with a portion to the plate separator 10. The oxo synthesis plant from which the thick oil is obtained may be upstream of the synthesis gas plant and the oil typically contains 2-ethylhexanol 2-ethylhexenal and butyl acetals thereof, n and i-butyl formate, dibutyl ethers, n- and ibutyl esters of n- and ibutyric acids, trimeric butyraldehydes and butyrates of 2- ethylhexanediol.
