Castings are made in aluminium, copper, their alloys, steel, cast iron, or any other metal, using a sand mould with a cavity at least partly occupied with grains or spheroids of carbon or graphite. The novelty is the use of a runner system in the mould which is employed to apply pressure on the molten metal via a zone which is air-tight or relatively impermeable to gas. Pref. the mould uses a downgate made of a steel, cast iron, or cardboard tube coated with water glass, or a refractory, e.g. clay, graphite, or SiC. Mfr. of cellular metal components is facilitated using this method.
