Compounds of the general formula (R 1 =H, halogen, NO 2 , CF 3 ; R 2 , 3 =H, Cl, Br, C 1-4 alkyl, CF 3 ; R 4 =C 1-4 alkyl; n=1-3) and their acid addition salts are prepared by (a)reacting the corresponding 1-unsubstituted benzodiazepine derivative with a reactive ester of R 4 COOC n H 2n OH or (b) indole ring-expansion, optionally followed by salt formation in either case. The above compounds are sedatives, muscle relaxants, hypnotics and anticonvulsants, and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them in association with a carrier.
