Zusammenfassung:	The surge arrester for protecting electric apparatus in high voltage electric power applications has a diode string including at least two avalanche diodes connected in series opposition, the diode string serving for limiting voltages across the electric apparatus. A controlled discharge device is governed by a current sensor and connected in parallel with the diode string. The controlled discharge device protects the diode string from excessive power dissipation, with a decoupler connected between the diode string and the parallel controlled discharge device. A controlled unit of the controlled discharge device has its input connected to the output of a current sensor in series with the diode string, and the output coupled through a pulse transformer to the igniter and working electrodes of the controlled discharge device.
