A method of electrostatically painting an object involves subjecting the paint in the form of a stream of particles produced by a spray head, to a corona discharge acting against the stream from an emitter electrode located downstream of the spray head along the longitudinal axis of the stream to an attractor electrode located at or adjacent the spray head. A convention air-type spray gun 32, Fig. 2, with a spray head 36 and air horns 38 having inwardly directed openings 40, can be converted for electrostatic operation by mounting an emitter electrode 48 within a housing 42 and channel member 46, both of dielectric material as illustrated. The spray head is earthed. The radius of curvature of the bend 48c of the electrode is typically between 1/16 and 3/8 inch (from 30‹ to 60‹), the distance between the pointed tip of the emitter electrode and the spray head is between 1/4 and 1/2 inch, and the potential 8-12 kilovolts. Fig. 3 depicts a straight needle-like electrode 74 fitted to an airless-type spray gun 72.
