Heading C2A. Novel magnesium salts of 5-methyl-3-(2,6- dichlorophenyl) - 4 - isoxazolyl - penicillin are prepared by contacting a solution of 5-methyl- 3 - (2,6 - dichlorophenyl) - 4 - isoxazolylpenicillin or its salt of a metal exchangeable with magnesium with a solution of a magnesium ion donor such as the magnesium salts of organic or inorganic acids. The product may have a particle size of 1-2 microns. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the novel magnesium salt and a carrier or adjuvant. An injectable composition comprises the magnesium salt, water, a magnesium cation donor, buffer agent, an isotonic agent and a suspending agent. Other conventional additives may also be present.
