Zusammenfassung:1,271,181. Casting processes. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 19 March, 1970 [20 March, 1969], No. 13309/70. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A cast pseudo-binary eutectic alloy of Ni 3 Al and Ni 3 Nb has a lamellar micro-structure of the Ni 3 Al and Ni 3 Nb phases arranged as alternate lamellµ which are in substantial alignment over a major portion of the length of the cast article. The alloy comprises 72À5% Ni, 23À1% Nb and 4À4% Al which produces the required eutectic at 33% Ni 3 Al balance Ni 3 Nb and the required microstructure is produced by unidirectional solidification parallel to a tensile axis of the article. The alloy is preferably superheated by 300‹ C. and the plane front growth of the ingot, produced by a water cooled brass plug in the bottom of the alumina crucible, is preferably 2 cm./hr.
