Novel basic esters (and acid addition salts thereof), of the general formula wherein R is an alkoxy group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, n is 1, 2 or 3, m is 2 or 3, x is 2, 3 or 4, y is 2 or 3 and x together with y is from 5 to 7, are prepared by the interaction of: (a) a N,N1-bis-o -hydroxyalkyl compound containing the desired heterocyclic nucleus with an alkoxy substituted benzoyl halide, (b) a N,N1-bis-omega -halogenoalkyl compound having the desired heterocyclic nucleus with an alkali or silver salt of an alkoxy substituted benzoic acid, or (c) the desired unsubstituted heterocyclic compound and the desired haloalkyl benzoate. N,N1 - bis - (3 - hydroxypropyl) homopiperazine, N,N1 - bis - (3 - bromopropyl) homopiperazine dihydrobromide and N,N1 - bis - (3 -hydroxypropyl) - 1,5 - diazacyclooctane are prepared by reacting the desired diamine and dihalopropane. Pharmaceutical compositions which produce coronary dilatation contain as the active ingredient the above novel compounds and are administered intravenously and orally.
